Most car enthusiasts can’t resist getting behind the wheel of a performance vehicle. Whether you’re a young modification car fanatic, a golden oldie that loves the classic cars, or someone who simply enjoys racing on four wheels, you’ll be keen to have a sports car gracing your garage. New models such as the C8 Chevrolet Corvette, BMW Z4, or the Lexus LC 500 are undoubtedly great sports cars, but all cost well north of $50,000. Some of the best of 2023 come with a price tag closer to $100,000.
Sadly, that makes many of the recent releases unattainable for most gearheads. Financial constraints mean lovers of sports cars must delve into the past to satisfy their passion. There are plenty of American-made cheap sports cars, and even more from Japan, that are well worth considering. But if you are in the market for an older sports car, don’t forget to check out what European manufacturers have to offer. There is an array of affordable sports cars from Italy, France, Germany, and the UK that represent class, quality, reliability, and value for money.
Savvy car buyers can pick up fairly recent premium-level European sports cars for under $50,000. And if you’re strapped for cash, there are some models that can be found for well under $10,000 that will satisfy your need for speed. Using values from Classic.com and Edmunds, and Bring a Trailer, we will be presenting a range of European sports cars for drivers with varying budgets. Regardless of the asking prices, all of these powerhouses are worth a spin. Let’s get into this.

10 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman – $44,500
Our first car on the list is by no means cheap, but it is certainly value for money if you can find one. A 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman can go for as little as $44,500 these days, and they are worth every last cent. As with almost all Porsche models, this sports car oozes sophistication and quality, and will still turn heads as it powers along the roads. The 718 Cayman’s performance is outstanding. It comes with a four-cylinder, turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, and as stock boasts 300 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. It has the power to thrill, but its handling is also worthy of note. If you’re shopping for a car for under $50,000, you will struggle to find any better than the Porsche 718 Cayman.
9 2014 Jaguar F-Type S V6 Roadster – $28,000
Travel nine years into the past, and a Jaguar F-Type S Roadster would have cost a pretty penny. The awesome V8 version was over $90,000, and the lesser V6 was just north of $80,000. These were the epitome of luxury sports cars back then, and remain exceptional vehicles today. The 2014 model of the V6 F-type S Roadster have sold for as little as $28,000 at auction in the United States, which makes them great value for money.
Not only do they look magnificent, but the F-Type V6 also came with genuine power thanks to its supercharged DOHC 3.0-liter V6 engine. It cranked out 380 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque, and could reportedly achieve 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds. It’s a whole lot of car for the price of a 2023 Toyota Prius.
8 2013 Audi TT RS – $24,000
While not quite as powerful as the Jaguar F-Type V6, the Audi TT RS is another fine option from that particular era. Even though this model is now 10 years old, it’s a sports car option to carefully consider. This model year only came available with a manual transmission and had a solid reputation. It’s very much a driver’s car with its tight interior and aerodynamic styling.
Another aspect that sports car fans liked about the Audi TT RS was its powertrain. It came with a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five engine that churned out 360 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque. It had spectacular acceleration, with Edmunds stating that it could hit 60 mph from a dead stop in under 4.3 seconds.

A 2013 Audi TT RS can be got for as little as $24,000. One sold in Texas this year for that amount with 100,000 miles on the clock, which is a very healthy number for a 10-year-old sports car like this.
7 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce – $23,000
This entry on our list might not look as exciting as the others. Despite its rather bland sedan appearance, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce from 2018 is a viable option for sports car fans. After all, “Veloce” is Italian for fast! The speed of this Italian sports car comes from its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Officially, the Giulia Veloce packs 276 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and has a top speed of 149 mph.
If you’re in the market for a cheap sports car that has reasonable power, reliable handling, but also has a practical side for daily driving, then this is a model to take a close look at.
6 1997 Aston Martin DB7 – $14,850
The Aston Martin DB7 is a great option if you’re hunting for elegance and performance for under $20,000. As with the previous Porsche entry on the list, this car is as much a status symbol as it is a sports car.
RELATED: 10 Fastest Sports Cars You Can Buy Under $30,000
The DB7 came with a supercharged 3.2-liter straight-six and could produce 335 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque. Those are some serious stats for a car from the '90s. This model is showing its age, especially in comparison to newer Aston Martins, but it represents a lot of bang for your buck. One sold in L.A. last year for under $15,000!
5 2004 BMW 6 Series E63 – $10,000
No list of European cars would be complete without a BMW. The German manufacturer has produced a long line of outstanding sports cars over the years, and is still making some of the best in 2023. If you have less than $10,000 to spend on a sports car, then a 6 Series might be the option for you.
BMW released the second generation 6 Series back in mid-2003, and it was an instant hit thanks to its large engine size and beautiful external styling. Appropriately, there were six variants of the E63, ranging from the 630Ci base model up to the awesome M6. There are plenty of these cars available on the market, and prices vary depending on both the condition and edition. You can expect to part with approximately $10,000 for one in a reasonable state.
4 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth – $8,200
Many of the cars on this list are true road monsters. This one, though, is probably the smallest sports car you will ever find. Back in 2008, the performance variant of the cute and cuddly Fiat 500 had its unveiling. Abarth gave this pint-sized rocket a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine that had 133 hp. Not bad considering the size of this car.
While not to everyone’s taste, this affordable sports car won’t break the bank. A 2012 model averages out at approximately $16,000, but one recently sold for just over $8,000.
3 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class – $7,000
We’re headed back to the heartland of Europe for our next entry. One of Europe’s greatest car manufacturers is Mercedes-Benz in Germany. There have been many sporty Mercs over the years and this one is worthy of your attention. It’s the SLK-Class. The second generation of this roadster started out in 2004, and production ran for seven years.

2 1997 Porsche Boxster 986 – $6,000
We’ve already had a Porsche on the list that was relatively expensive. If you’re operating on a much tighter budget but still want a Porsche, a sensible option is the first-generation Boxster. This cheap sports car has the unmistakable Porsche styling, and despite its bargain-basement price tag, can still perform reasonably well. Its 2.5-liter engine has an output of 201 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque.
The manual will do 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds, which doesn’t make it an elite performance car, but is acceptable for a price below $10,000. A base model convertible Boxster from 1997 will set you back in the region of $6,000.
1 2007 – Volkswagen Golf GTI – $5,000
One of the best foreign sports cars and the cheapest to maintain is none other than the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The German auto manufacturer has been producing the GTI since 1976, so there are a wide variety of these models available on the used market. One of the best versions of this iconic European sports car, in terms of value, is the fifth generation.
A 2007 model Volkswagen Golf GTI will fetch on average $11,500 according to Classic.com. But if you’re a patient buyer, you could find one of these awesome hatchbacks for as little as $5,000.
